Blackout Solutions: Facilities to Prioritize When Using Solar Power

Solar power is an appealing prospect for homeowners that want to reduce their carbon footprint and save on utility costs. While it requires a substantial investment of money, time, and effort, its long-term benefits for you will far outweigh the costs that you spent.

One of these benefits is that you will have a reliable source of power in case of emergencies. If you have a solar generator, your solar power bank can also supply power to your home in Boise in case of power outages.

While you should live simply during the power outage, some essential facilities in a household should be powered by your generator. Find out what these are below.

Water

Depending on your plumbing system and source of water, you might lose your water supply if there is no electricity. Water is essential because it is an integral part of a household’s activities. It is used not only for drinking but also for bathing and rinsing items.

Practice bathing frequently to remove any dirt or germs that happen to stick to you and your household. If your water supply can’t handle everyday bathing, do it at least every other day to maintain a certain level of cleanliness.

The most important item to power is your water purifier, as water is essential in everyday living. Purifying your water before consuming it is important because you need to remove the contaminants that tap water might have. If you drink unfiltered water, you might become sick.

Refrigerator

Once a refrigerator’s power gets cut, the food stored inside will have an alarmingly shortened shelf life. Food outside the freezer can last until four hours, while food inside the freezer can last between 24 to 48 hours. Keep in mind that this only applies if the fridge is unopened.

Don’t forget that your electricity is limited during power outages. Reduce your refrigerator’s power consumption by raising the temperature level. Rearrange the food inside and keep them evenly spaced apart so that the food can still become cold.

In the future, place your fridge in a cool spot, and away from any heat-generating appliances. You should also keep it away from windows so that the sunlight doesn’t warm up the fridge.

Stove

Stoves are needed to cook food properly. Most people would prefer having a home-cooked meal over canned food. Enduring the power outage will be easier with a satisfied stomach and contented taste buds.

In case of a prolonged power outage, avoid using the electric stove for cooking because it can be power intensive. While the taste is nothing to write home about, canned food has more nutrients compared to cooked food since they were packaged at their best state.

Charging Stations

Cell phones are essential for people as a way to avoid boredom and keep in touch with their loved ones. Make sure that the outlets continue working to allow your household’s devices to charge. Avoid using power-intensive apps, though, to minimize emergency power usage.

Be prepared for any power outage by keeping your power banks fully charged. While it can be tempting to charge your phone using your power bank since it’s more portable, opt to charge your phone using the outlets instead.

Heaters and Fans

While you can tolerate the heat by sweating it out, you should make sure that you stay warm during chilly weather. If your temperature gets lower than normal, your immune system will be weaker, and that increases your chances of catching illnesses.

That’s why heaters are needed; they keep your household warm during the winter season. If you have ceiling fans, turn it on so that the warm air is circulated instead of floating up and staying on the ceiling. If you still feel cold, bundle up in warm clothes.

To avoid running out of power, measure the energy consumption of your appliances beforehand, and determine the maximum capacity of your solar power banks. Plan out your usage by scheduling appliance uses or utilizing a counting basis.
